LARNACA - Cyprus Airways inaugurated Friday, with a special flight, a new route from Larnaka Airport to Erbil Airport, Iraq.
Cyprus Airways Executive Chairman Giorgos Mavrocostas said that the first four flights to Erbil will be held once a week during July and will be chartered. After that, the flights will be scheduled, he said, adding that there is a possibility to increase the their number.
Mavrocostas expressed satisfaction over the fact that the Cyprus Airways flight is the first one to connect Cyprus with Iraq and Kurdistan.
Cyprus Airways' new route is the result of a cooperation with Iraq Tourism Organisation Merjan. The agreement between the two sides was signed Friday.
Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Cyprus Ministry of Communication and Works Alekos Michaelides, stated that this is the beginning for a closer commercial relation between Cyprus and Iraq.
Michaelides said that the Larnaka International Airport constitutes for Iraq “a window to Europe”. In addition, he expressed the support of the Ministry towards Cyprus Airway's initiative.
